DC History Club: Roy Thomas at DC August 2020 Introduction

Hi
@TurokSonofStone1950
Here

The DC Histoty Club Poll for August resulted in a tie between John Byrne and Roy Thomas.

As a reslt I will spend the next two weeks discussing some of the DC work done by Roy Thomas

While @msgtv will spend the other two weeks in the nonth on John Byrne, concentrating on his work on Superman and Wonder.Woman.

I selected

All Star Squadron
Shazam The New Beginning

As my topics

Roy Thomas’s major series during his time at DC were

All Star Squadron

Arak, Son of Thunder

Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!

Infinity Inc

Shazam The New Beginning

Young All-Stars

Arak and the main Captain Carrot title are not currently in our Comic Book Library

Infinity Inc has been a major topic in the JSA Book.Club. to join that club

Young All Stars was a change in title and direction for All Stat Squadron, concentrating on the young heroes who replaced Superman Batman Wonder.Woman and Aquaman as required by Crisis of Infinite Earth which resulted in the original 1940s versions of these characters never having existed.

Finally the JSA Book.Club recently looked at issue 1 to 6 of All Star Squadron. Please visit that topic to see what members of that club thought of some of the same issues we will be reading

DC History Club: Roy Thomas at DC August 2020 Earth 2

Earth 2 is popular these days because Stargirl resides there and she is trying to create a new JSA

The three other member of the JSA wre created by Roy Thomas in the title
Infinity Inc. They were created as young adults not teenagers though.

Characters appearing in both Stargirl and the All Starv Squadron issues sre the original Dr Mid Nite and Hourman, Shinibg Knight, Solomon Grundy and the Dragon Lord.

All Star Squadron is set in the 1949s while Stargirl iscset in the currnt day.

Is it the same JSA? Well Dr Mid Nite’e goggle says the original version was born in 1914.

Earth 2

Basically Earth 2 is the parallel’, alternate Earth where the original 1940s Golden Age of super heroes resided. The super hero team on Earth 2 was called the Justice Society of America or JSA.

DC History Club: Roy Thomas at DC August 2020 Goals of Roy Thomas in Writing All Star Squadron

When DC Comics hired Roy Thomas
They knew he wanted to.
Write a JSA comics.

It would always be on.Earth 2, apart from the main Earth One

He had a choice in setting
The JSA in the then present day
Which meant the JSA members
Would be in their 60s but very experienced
Or in the 40s
When they would be
In their 20s but inexperienced

He choose the World War II Era

Thomas also decided to concentrate on promising characters who had either been ignored or downplayed rather than the Earth Two counterparts of the main Earth’s heroes.

The All-Star Squadro.ncluded not only the members of the Justice Society as it had existed in the pages of the 1940s All-Star Comics, but
numerous other heroes, as well:
not only other extant DC characters of the early ’40s,
but also heroes from the later-acquired Quality Comics line
—plus a couple of brand new heroes
(Female Firebrand, Black Amazing Man and Japenese Tsunami)
retroactively created in the ’80s for gender and ethnic balance.

In other words, Thomas “revealed” that the JSA had actually been part of a much larger umbrella group, the All-Star Squadron, as ordered by FDR…

In some sense
All Star Squadron was more like
The animated Justice League Unlimited show, with scores of members
While the traditional JSA
Was more ikev the 7 person
Animated Justice League show
ThejLU approach was more flexible
And an issue could always concentrate
On a small subset of the larger group

The phrase “retroactive continuity” was used (attributed to a fan) in the letter column in issue #18, of All.Star Squadron which soon became “Retcon”. The series was heavily based around retcons in the positive sense—it often told stories that happened between issues of real Golden Age series, gave characters origins who never had them, and cleared up plot holes and dangling plots from decades ago. It generally avoided the “everything you know is a lie” type of retcon, though there were some minor history changes. It also gave a decent explanation why the really powerful superheroes didn’t invade the Axis powers to end the war overnight The Axis had mystical objects that would take mind control of the magical superheroes and those subseptable to magic like Superman who tried entering land under Axis control.

The book was real world histoeic accuratr.

IThe story begins on December 6 1942, the day before
the Attach on.Pearl Harbor

This was very obvious due to the frequent use of real-world dates and events; eight published years of All-Star Squadron and Young All-Stars took place over a seven-month period in the war.

He also made
The All Squadron stories
Fit within the already established
All Star stories

Issues1 to 4
Were between
All Star 10 and 11

You can tell
That from the covers on all star

Dr Mid Nite ia a JSA member since issue 8

But the costume created by Simon and Kirby

Wonder Woman is not yet a member

Cover 10 new costume

Page 1 issue 10

Cover 11 is after Pearl Jarbor
And Wonder Woman is a JSA membet

Page 1 issue 11

Roy Thomas always did his homework on All Star Squadron
and it shows.

The Crisis on Infinite Earths destroyed Earth-2, which now never existed. This was not good for the book, which ended at issue 67 after a series of inventory stories dealing with character origins and a retelling of a classic Superman story in the new retconned Superman-less history. The book was succeeded by Young All-Stars, which replaced the now retconned Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman, went a further 31 issues plus an annual, and is generally considered lower quality than the series itself.

In All-Star Squadron #4, I was sad to see what happened to the original Firedbrand (Rod Reilly) as a result of the attack. Having actually read his Golden Age appearances in Police Comics, it was a sad end to a great mystery man’s career.

I really like the idea of using the Holy Grail as the means to keep superheroes out of Japan. The references to The Spear of Destiny and The Holy Grail bring out the Medieval lit nerd in me. It was a cool idea and it answered the important question of why the heroes didn’t just end the war.

Thanks for linking that article about Superman being declared 4F due to his x-ray vision! I never knew that, but it’s classic Superman logic!

DC History Club: Roy Thomas at DC' August 2020 All Star Squadron Issue 31 to 35

In 1973 Comic Book Justice League of America 107 108 Black Condor, Dolll Man, Human Bomb, Ray, Phantom Lady, Uncle Sam were on Earth X where Nazis won World War II.Plastic Man and the Blackhawks wete dead All heroes were from Quality Comics Publications By Len Wein and lDick Dillion

https://www.dcuniverse.com/comics/book/-/63cc9b75-7797-49c3-b3d6-0cc05f5cf757

In All Star Squadron 31 to 35 Roy Thomas creates a convolited plot where the Quality Heroes begin on.Earth 2. There is an adventure in Earth X.wherevthe Nazis are wining with one groyp of heroes including Hourman. Then eventually.a subset of the Quality Heroes go to Earth X whsre they.will be known as The Freedom.Fighters

It is ironic that Roy made all this effort and a year orcso layer, in Crisis on Infinite Earths, Earth X and Earth 2 would cease to exist.

Our Comic Book Lobrary has many titles on the Freedom.Fighters.

Uncle Same Phatom Lady and the Rau are often fan favorites.

Roy shows in.this arc he can handle a large group of super heroes.

Who wes your favorite charactes in this arc?

I like the beginning where Quality Hero Midnight looks identicsl to Will Eisnwr’s Spirit

I wonder about Dollma’s figbting ability. Usually you need a certain.amount of mass to deliver a blow yet Dollman is light enough to fit on a hand without stress. The 60s Atom had weight and size control on his suit so he could make himself light enough to glide but heavy enough to bring doen a msn.

Thought this exchange between @dcallstar and @darkstarz from the message announcing this month was worth bringing over to the thread so no one would miss it.

@dcallstar

I enjoyed so much of what Roy Thomas contributed to the DC mythos throughout the 80s in particular. All Star Squadron was such a great book, and it got me more interested in the earliest years of DC Comics, with its emphasis on the heroes of the World War II era on Earth 2. Roy was the perfect caretaker for these golden-age greats throughout the 80s.

Another book, which I think never got as much credit as it should have, was Jonni Thunder AKA Thunderbolt. This was a modern-day reinvention of the JSA character. Jonni was a female private eye, and this was a different Thunderbolt, as well. The 4-issue mini-series was written by Roy and his wife Dann, and gorgeously illustrated by Dick Giordano.

@darkstarz
I read this earlier today and wondered how I never heard of it and furthermore how Jonni Thunder never went beyond Infinity Inc. This mini-series took me by complete surprise. The art was magnificent but the writing drew me into Jonni’s world and inside of her head. Each page presented another chance to explore her thoughts as her predicament grew.

Reading through Thomas’ original stint at Marvel the title that really caught my eye was Conan the Barbarian. I had no idea he was such an important writer for the character and from his work in All-Star I think it would be a perfect fit.
