Penguin: Pain & Prejudice (2011-) #1
I know that Penguin is one of the most iconic Batman villains, but I still think he’s underrated. There’s a lot of real sympathetic character elements that make him super complex. This book really captures that.
This is probably one of my favorite comic stories to date. As evil as the Penguin is, we can’t help but sympathize with him. He is unfortunate soul who was born with superficial disadvantages combined with an abusive upbringing/ social life. He is a social reject who was able to harness his pain and anger into building himself as the larger than life crime lord that he becomes. His superior cunning and intellect made him into one of Batman’s most formidable foes. But no matter how many lives he ends, ruins or threatens, he is still the sad Cooblepot boy that longs for a loving hand. And this story is a beautiful piece that demonstrates the Penguin’s tragic character.
