Prez (1973-) #1
Ahhhh, PREZ! Faster than a Continuing Resolution; more powerful than an Electoral College!
One of the flat-out weirdest entries in DC’s 70s catalog, PREZ was a part of their “social conscience” effort, which included the far more famous GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW.
The distant offspring of editorial cartooning and irreverent underground comics, PREZ makes for a wild trip. Joe Simon, the legendary creative partner of Jack Kirby, wrote a book that reads exactly like a WWII-era survivor would imagine a “hippie” book should be. And it’s all the more glorious for it.
By all means, give it a spin next to other books of a similar vein, like Simon’s prior effort, BROTHER POWER THE GEEK, and the far more serious 1997 Vertigo effort, UNCLE SAM, by Steve Darnell and Alex Ross. And, natch, the 2015 miniseries PREZ by Mark Russell and Ben Caldwell, which serves as a sorta kinda sequel.
And remember, “He’ll give you the right time!”
