Think You Know Shazam? Get Featured in DC Universe Encyclopedia!

This week, we’re asking DC fans to submit their fun trivia facts about a character named Billy Batson, who, when speaks the name of an ages-old wizard, is transformed into the World’s Mightiest Mortal!

Billy Batson’s parents died when he was still a baby. The orphaned child believed he had no one to rely on and had to fend for himself. But one day, he was guided to the Rock of Eternity, where the ancient wizard Shazam waited. The world needed heroes and the boy became the wizard’s new champion, able to transform himself into an adult superhero by calling down a magical bolt of lightning.

Of course, we can only be talking about the one and only Shazam!

JSA #43. Captain Marvel has studied every battle strategy from the last 5,000 years (this may be a benefit of the Wisdom of Solomon, but it’s not confirmed in text, so it could just be Billy loving to read).

In Jerry Ordway’s “Power of Shazam” series, Billy had the ability to change Cap Marvel’s appearance just by visualizing what he wanted to look like before transforming:

In Day of Vengeance #6 the Specter turned Shazam back into Billy Batson by saying “Shazam.”

In Superman #102 Shazam arm wrestles Superman and loses.

In the Power of Shazam graphic Novel, the face of Shazam come’s from Billy’s father, Clarence Charles Batson, a reference to Shazam artist C.C. Beck. See the resemble in the picture of his father.

Shazam was the first superhero on film. In 1941, he starred in his own movie serial, “The Adventures of Captain Marvel” played by Tom Tyler as Captain Marvel and Frank Coghlan, Jr. as Billy Batson. The serial also had Tyler on a wire rig to showcase flying, whereas the Superman serials to come later switched to animation whenever Superman would fly.

There are actually 3 other people also named Billy Batson who formed a “Billy Batson Club” with the real Billy. The other Billy Batsons also gained Shazam powers becoming The Lieutenant Marvels.

Shazam is Omni-Lingual meaning he can speak every language include ancient and dead on earth as well as various alien languages.
